Celebration of Christmas Eve around the World

Christmas celebration is famous all over the globe. Celebrated with great pump and show, the festival showcases colors, music, gift, lights and happiness. Are you aware of the fact that this spectacular event is celebrated in different styles across various countries? 

Norway

According to Norwegian legend, Christmas Eve brings all types of evil and witches who steal brooms to ride the sky. It is customary for households in Norway to conceal all their brooms and similar cleaning equipment before bedtime. The courageous men in the family will venture outside and fire shotguns into the air to frighten the evil spirits.

Caracas

In the capital of the Venezuelan, it is customary for the city to get to early morning Mass of Christmas using roller skates. Due to this unusual method of transport, the Vehicular access to the city is blocked off in various areas before 8. The night before Christmas, children tie a corner of string to their big toe and hand the other out of window. It allows the passerby roller skaters to provide a friendly tug in the morning.

Austria

In a destination like Austria, Santa brings gifts for good children while an unlikely evil Krampus punish the bad children. It looks exactly opposite to the cheerful Santa. Horrifying and beast like Krampus frightens and punish the children who misbehave. It is often portrayed carrying unruly kiddies in his basket.

Czech Republic

On Christmas Eve, there is an unusual tradition followed by women to know their marital status. Single Czech women participate in a traditional practice of fortune-telling that enables them to learn about their marital status for the coming year. They take off their shoe, stand with their back to a door and flip it over the shoulder. If the shoe falls with its toe facing the door, then it is said that the thrower will get married in the next year. If the shoe falls with its heel to the door, the thrower has to wait for another year to get married.

Ukraine

Christmas trees are adorned with all the standard embellishments you can expect coupled with an unconventional addition. According to a traditional folk tale, a poor widow and her family awoke to find a spider and had adorned her Christmas tree with its web. As she was not able to afford decorations, the idea helped here making a prosperous Christmas. Since then, Ukrainian trees have an artificial spider and web invisible on them, which is believed to bring good luck for the finder.
